Choosing a Course/Workshop

All of these offerings are provided at no cost to the individual or host agency. Among the offerings, the web-based training courses offer the most flexibility since the training can be conducted at your own pace and you can pick and choose the content that is of most interest to you.

Regions that have more than a few individuals that are interested in a particular topic area may elect to host an on-site training course or workshop led by expert facilitators. On-site, facilitated courses and workshops offer several benefits over web-based training. These courses: 1) can be tailored as necessary to meet the region's specific needs, 2) encourage interaction between participants to ensure a shared understanding and richer learning experience, and 3) use local examples to illustrate key points.

While the on-site workshops all include a training component, each workshop is set up to achieve additional tangible outcomes beyond training through hands-on activities by the participants. The Quick-Start workshop is intended for regions that need to update their regional ITS architecture and results in a plan for update that reflects the current state of the architecture and the region's needs. The Architecture Development workshop is actually direct assistance that includes a series of workshops for a region that is developing their own regional ITS architecture. The Use & Maintenance workshop is oriented towards regions that have an up-to-date architecture and need to develop a better understanding of how to use and maintain their architecture over time. The Systems Engineering for ITS Workshop couples systems engineering training with process improvement discussions that evaluate systems engineering processes in the region.

Most of the workshops and training courses qualify for Professional Development Hours (PDH). See the course information to find out how many PDHs a course or workshop qualifies for.

Scheduling a Course/Workshop

You can begin the web-based training courses immediately. Select one of the web-based training courses for specific instructions on how to get started. To schedule an on-site workshop or training course, see http://ops.fhwa.dot.gov/int_its_deployment/index.htm.

NHI Course Offerings

The U.S.DOT National Highway Institute (NHI) also offers a number of courses related to ITS, ITS Architecture, and Systems Engineering. See their website at http://www.nhi.fhwa.dot.gov for more information.
